Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has told this publication that he was disappointed by Moroka Swallows’ Chairman David Mogashoa’s social media reaction following the Premier Soccer League DC ruling on Thursday.
Earlier Swallows were punished by the PSL DC for their two cancelled games last month, handing walkover wins to Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, and fining Swallows R1 million (R600,000 suspended for 24 months).
Spurs were pulled into the conversation after the club sent an internal letter to all member clubs regarding the Swallows’ matter, stating the scenario needed to be severely dealt with, as it had brought the league into disrepute and could lead to further damages.
But while disappointed with the ruling, Efstathiou was particularly disappointed by Mogashoa’s reaction on social media, as he posted “Moroka Swallows 1-0 Cape Town Spurs” on the X platform.
“I think the social media comments from David Mogashoa shows the disrespect he has for the ruling that was given to him,” Efstathiou told iDiski Times.
“Because for me, it seems like for him it was a joke, and it’s a win. He’s actually got no remorse. And it’s even worse, we should be talking about such serious matters and he likes to joke about it like it’s normal. So this is the normality now of our football. For me, even his posts bring the league into disrepute, perhaps he should have to pay the balance of that fine now.”
Efstathiou said the letter wasn’t made public and was an internal memo sent to all clubs who are members of the league, and reiterated a point in the letter that even if their league position wasn’t precarious, they would have had the same beliefs.
“The letter was sent to all the 32 member clubs out of respect,” Efstathiou explained.
“It wasn’t an issue between Cape Town Spurs or the PSL or Moroka Swallows, it was just to bring in some points regarding our thinking if this could lead to further issues, at some point if it’s not dealt with correctly.
“Obviously, everyone feels that now it’s been dealt correctly and even David himself thinks it’s been dealt with correctly so no further comment.”
