Red-hot Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa says winning the three points was more important than moving to the top of the Golden Boot ranking.
Mabasa added two more goals, as the Buccaneers downed Chippa United 2-0 at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The result saw Pirates close their gap on second-placed Stellenbosch FC to just one point, with Mabasa moving past Iqraam Rayners in the Golde Boot ranking.
After the match, he discussed taking the spot-kick despite missing a recent penalty and insisted he’s not focussed on the Golden Boot race.
“We’ve been practicing our penalties, even in the Royal AM game, Tito took it,” he added.
“It’s not really on my mind [golden boot]. The important thing is for the team to get three points and that’s exactly what we did here today.
“If it happens [that I win Golden Boot], it’s by the grace of God and I’ll be thankful for that.
“But yeah, the three points were important today.”
When quizzed how much it would mean to him to finish as the league’s top scorer, Mabasa did admit it’s one of the highest awards for a striker.
“Obviously it will mean a lot. As a striker that’s what you look to do, you look to score goals and if they’re coming the way they are right now, I’m very glad and I’m very happy,” he added.
“If it happens it will be by the grace of God and I’ll be thankful for that.”
Mabasa now sits on 15 goals overall, with nine of them coming since he re-joined Pirates in January, while he also netted six for Moroka Swallows in the first half of the campaign.
