Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have worked wonders since taking over at Wrexham, witnessing Phil Parkinson’s side on their journey from being stranded in the Vanarama National League to securing promotion to League One.
According to Capology, Wrexham players have an average weekly salary of £3,698, while they spend an estimated £5.6m on player wages every year. Of course, the wage bill has risen since moving into the English Football League, with several players thought to be earning more than £4,500 per week.
James McClean, George Evans and Steven Fletcher were some of the bigger names who joined the Red Dragons in 2023/24, with all three having experienced the EFL Championship or higher.
With the club currently only heading on an upward trajectory alongside their ambitious owners, you would expect the annual wage bill to only rise from here as the club look to continue climbing the Football League.

Here are Wrexham’s top earners in more detail…
10
Elliot Lee
£4,300 per week
Elliot Lee is one player due for a pay rise given his 16 goals (at the time of writing) have been crucial to Wrexham’s successful promotion campaign. In fact, he signed a new deal at the start of the year, so he may well be earning more than his estimated £4.3k-per-week salary, but he’s almost certainly been value for money since joining from Luton Town in summer 2022.
9
Ben Tozer
£4,500 per week
While he has been out of the team in recent weeks, Ben Tozer has nevertheless been a key member of the squad, having been trusted by Phil Parkinson to take on captaincy duties.
A Red Dragon since 2021, Tozer was an ever-present as Wrexham made it back to the Football League last season and a crucial component of the title-winning side, proving a fine investment at £4.5k per week in wages.
8
Ollie Palmer
£4,800 per week
Ollie Palmer became Wrexham’s record signing after signing for the club in January 2022. His £300k switch from AFC Wimbledon broke a record that had stood for 45 years. Given Wrexham’s achievements since then, Reynolds and McElhenney can look back on this as money well spent, with Palmer complementing Paul Mullin on the field as he bagged 33 goals in his first 18 months.
With the squad growing and improving, his wage now stands at a modest £4,800, but Palmer has remained an integral part of Parkinson’s plans.
7
Paul Mullin
£4,800 per week
Wrexham’s undisputed star man has had another season to remember after returning from injury to spearhead Wrexham’s promotion push. Paul Mullin is another player who signed a new deal in the new year, so may well have seen a pay rise since the start of the season, and given his exploits since arriving at the Racecourse Ground, you can’t deny it will have been well deserved.

6
Eoghan O’Connell
£5,300 per week
A rock in the Wrexham backline, Eoghan O’Connell quickly became an important member of the squad after joining in January 2023, earning a £5.3k-per-week wage that has been justified through the Red Dragons’ subsequent rise up the Football League.
His contract is thought to be up for renewal in the summer, so it remains to be seen whether he will be retained, but O’Connell’s worth to the team is clear to see.
5
Will Boyle
£5,400 per week
An astute signing for a seasoned player at Football League level, Will Boyle earned his second promotion from League Two with Wrexham this year, having previously won the fourth-tier title with Cheltenham Town.
At £5,400 per week, only a few players earn more than Boyle, but few can match his experience, which will have been invaluable at the back for the Red Dragons this term.
4
Andy Cannon
£5,500 per week
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Andy Cannon ranks as one of Wrexham’s highest earners as they seek to rise through the EFL at pace, with the midfielder securing a third promotion in three seasons.
Two of those promotions were in the National League, with Cannon part of Stockport’s 2021/22 title-winning side before repeating the trick with Wrexham a year later.
Going up to the third tier alongside Stockport after this season, Cannon will surely be an important squad player once again next term as he goes for four in a row.
3
Steven Fletcher
£5,600 per week
Joining at the end of the summer window, Steven Fletcher became something of a marquee free signing for Wrexham after swapping eastern Scotland for northern Wales.
That came at a hefty price in wages, but only two players have scored more than the Scot in his first season at the club, which certainly isn’t bad going with the 37-year-old in the latter stages of his career.
2
James McClean
£6,100 per week
Another big-name arrival in the summer of 2023 came in the form of former Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion ace James McClean. The 104-cap Republic of Ireland international ranks as Wrexham’s second-highest earner, and has contributed more assists than anyone else.
Wrexham have also seen McClean’s dark side, with 11 yellow cards to his name in the league, but plenty will surely attest that he has been worth splashing the cash on.
1
George Evans
£7,200 per week
Joining on a free transfer from Millwall in the summer, George Evans has become a stalwart in the centre of the Wrexham midfield, with only injuries preventing him from becoming a virtual ever-present. No wonder, then, that he is their best-paid player.
Of their regular players (min. 10 appearances), he ranks among the best in terms of points per game, with his total of 2.06 per match bettered only by Thomas O’Connor and Max Cleworth. He’s been more than worth the money.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have worked wonders since taking over at Wrexham, witnessing Phil Parkinson’s side on their journey from being stranded in the Vanarama National League to securing promotion to League One.
