Major League Soccer Toronto FC side have loaned former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula to their reserves team, the club announced.
Mailula, 22, had been struggling to make a breakthrough into the Toronto starting line-up, as he had made only five appearances for the side since completing his move from Sundowns in July 2023.
But things looked on the up after he recently made his first appearance in 2024 and scored on his starting XI debut, however, he has now been loaned to the club’s reserves and will play in the MLS Next Generation.
“Toronto FC announced today (Sunday) that the club has loaned forward Cassius Mailula to Toronto FC II ahead of this afternoon’s match against Orlando City B at Osceola Heritage Park,” the club stated.
“Toronto FC retains the right to recall the player at any time during the MLS regular season.”
Toronto’s head coach John Herdman had continuously stated that Mailula has tough competition, as he was competing with the likes of Italian Federico Bernardeschi and former Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne.
At Toronto FC II, Mailula made his debut on Sunday and featured for 61 minutes.
The Sundowns development player also lost his place in the Bafana Bafana squad following a lack of game-time at the club level.
