Three suspects connected to a series of cash-in-transit heists in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape have been apprehended.
The Hawks, also known as the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigations, captured the trio in the early hours of Thursday.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana stated that the three suspects, aged between 30 and 56, will appear in the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning, facing charges of cash-in-transit armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition.
He explained that based on intelligence information, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Mthatha, Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Mthatha Local Record Centre (LCRC) located the suspects in Tsolo.
“The team apprehended the first suspect at his reported residence. They then proceeded to the second residence where another wanted suspect was arrested along with his licensed 9mm pistol.
“The third suspect was caught at a third residence with an unlicensed 9mm pistol and live ammunition,” Mhlakuvana added.
“At a fourth residence, although the suspect was not present, cash was found hidden in the bedroom. Two 9mm pistols and live ammunition were confiscated for further investigation.”
The suspects are wanted for cash-in-transit robberies in Mthatha, and the authorities are investigating to determine if they are involved in other violent crimes.
Four additional suspects are still being sought by the police.
Brigadier Vanessa Hastings, acting provincial head of the Hawks, praised the team for their efforts in combating cash-in-transit robberies.
