Two men, Gordon Matwetwe Muningi, 50, and Tebogo Thutlwa, 48, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court facing murder charges for the killing of a respected medical doctor in Soweto.
Muningi and Thutlwa are accused of the murder of Dr. Michael Isabelle, who was affectionately known as the “people’s doctor” in the Soweto community.
Dr. Isabelle was tragically killed in Dobsonville, Soweto on February 27, causing shock and grief in the community.
Gauteng spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Phindi Mjonondwane, stated, “Doctor Michael Isabelle was shot at his practice in Dobsonville on February 26, when three men arrived pretending to seek medical attention for their friend. Once inside the consultation room, they allegedly attacked Isabelle, leading to a shoot-out where one of the assailants was shot and later died.”
The suspects fled the scene using the doctor’s receptionist’s vehicle.
The burnt remnants of the receptionist’s vehicle were found in Alexandra.
The suspects were apprehended by the SAPS on March 21 and are facing multiple charges including murder, robbery, malicious damage, possession of firearms, and obstruction of justice.
The case has been postponed for further investigation until April 2.
In a separate incident, IOL reported last month that three suspects, Siyabonga Kekane, 20, Nkateko Tshidzumba, 25, and Bheki Ndlovu, 38, were in custody for the murder of Dr. Nicholas Procter.
These suspects were arrested in Protea Glen, Soweto, for the crime that occurred in Mpumalanga.
