Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson has explained the “problem” which has led to no Amakhosi stars making Hugo Broos’ final 23-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Bafana Bafana finished in third place at the tournament in Ivory Coast, leaving many in South Africa filled with pride at the bronze medal achieved by Broos and his players.
However, apart from Sibongiseni Mthethwa, who was on the stand-by list, no Chiefs player was part of Broos’ selection, which has raised eyebrows before the tournament.
Johnson, though, admitted Chiefs first have to look at themselves and consistently compete with the other top teams in Mzansi before the situation will change again.
“Kaizer Chiefs have always had those types of players,” he told journalists.
“The problem with us is that we just have to be consistent in competing with the other teams and then our players will be in the national team.
“We improve and our players will definitely be in the national team. It doesn’t bother me now but for sure in the future Kaizer Chiefs players will be in the national team.”
Chiefs, who resumed their DStv Premiership campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw at Royal AM, are back in action on Sunday when they will host Milford in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32.
