A normal day at work got a bit more exciting for some a few working at the Durban Harbour when they discovered two trapped sharks on the dry docks.
The two Zambezi sharks were discovered by Transnet staff who immediately stopped the draining process.
SHARKS IN PICKLE
According to uSharka Sea World Aquarist Rob Kyle, for safety reasons, the decision was made to drain the water level in order to virtually immobilize the sharks in the water.
“We remained out of the water until the water level was shallow enough to render the shark virtually motionless,” says Kyle.
“We then cautiously slid the stretcher underneath the shark and safely and securely contained it in the stretcher to prevent it from sliding out when it was being lifted out the drydock” he added.
DOCTORS VISIT
The sharks who weighed just under 200kgs, were the taken to the uShaka Sea World vetenerian for a health check.
“Both the animals had superficial abrasions and scuff marks on their bodies from rubbing on the bottom of the dock and bumping into the supports that are used to hold the ships upright”
They are expected to make a full recovery as none of the abrasions were deep enough to be of concern.
