The public has been warned by police not to take the law into their own hands when dealing with someone they suspect to be a criminal.
This was after community members from Bester in Durban assaulted a 44-year-old man demanding that he show them where the body of a woman, Thokozile Makhowane, was.
Makhowane was last seen with her boyfriend on November 14.
He was arrested but later released due to insufficient evidence.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said the group of people assaulted the boyfriend severely until he showed them where he had buried Makhowane’s body.
“The semi-decomposed body was found in a shallow grave at Bramhoea in the Bester area,” said Mbele.
The boyfriend sustained multiple wounds from the assault and died on his way to hospital.
“The public is advised not to take the law into their own hands and to always call the police for assistance. Those found to be involved in the killing of the man will face the law. They will be arrested and charged accordingly,” said Mbele.
