Mamelodi Sundowns have broken the Premier Soccer League (PSL) record of nine consecutive wins to start a new season after their 2-0 victory over SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby clash at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Sundowns moved back to the summit of the DStv Premiership after the three points, which marked their first league clash since September, highlighting the supreme dominance Rulani Mokwena’s side have enjoyed in his first full season as head coach.
Peter Shalulile opened the scoring against their city rivals, just after the half-hour mark for his eighth of the season – to which at that point the home side looked to be showing a real fight to compete in the derby.
But Sundowns took control of proceedings and went on to double the advantage with something straight off the training ground when Neo Maema’s chipped free-kick found Lucas Ribeiro Costa inside the area, after a perfectly timed run, who smashed the ball beyond Washington Arubi.
In the second half, substitute Shandre Campbell looked to take the game to Sundowns in their off foray forward and a couple of his efforts tested Ronwen Williams but didn’t nearly hold enough quality to beat the Bafana Bafana captain.
Lebo Moboe had the best chance for the visitors to make it 3-0 but his first touch let him down, resulting in his shot at goal not finding the target, but it didn’t cause much harm for the result as Sundowns walked out Moripe comfortably as winners on the night.
The win sees Sundowns break Kaizer Chiefs’ record of consecutive wins to start a league campaign, with a staggering nine straight victories.
