In a significant move to enhance public safety, the City of Johannesburg’s Branch of Public Wellbeing, under the leadership of Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, launched a new Strategic Response Unit within the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on Friday, November 10, 2023.
This establishment of the unit is seen as a crucial milestone, aligning with the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) commitment to combating crime, as outlined in their 2021 local government statement.
The EFF firmly believes that the people of Johannesburg deserve to live in a secure environment, free from the scourge of crime and violence that has plagued the city for too long. Recognizing the need to address the root causes of crime, such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, corruption, and social issues, the EFF advocates for radical economic change and improved service delivery.
The newly formed JMPD Strategic Response Unit comprises highly trained and specialized metro police officers who will concentrate on tackling gang and drug-related crimes, kidnappings, cash-in-transit heists, and illegal mining, among other offenses within the metro.
In addition to its primary focus, the unit will monitor highways, specifically the M1 and N1, with a close eye on exits and ramps to prevent and respond to incidents of theft, robbery, and road rage.
The EFF commends the leadership direction of Dr. Tshwaku, who also serves as the EFF regional president in Johannesburg, for his visionary and decisive action in launching this initiative, inspired by the EFF manifesto’s principle of “no obligations but responsibilities” in the fight against crime.
The party also praises the courageous and dedicated members of the JMPD who, on a daily basis, put their lives at great risk to protect and serve the people of Johannesburg.
