Israeli troops and tanks launched an attack on Gaza’s main northern city from both sides on Monday. This came three days after initiating a ground offensive, which has resulted in increased international calls for the protection of civilians. Israel’s military has claimed to have struck over 600 militant targets in recent days, as they expand their operations in Gaza. The militants, fighting alongside Hamas, have repelled an attempted push from Israeli tanks into Gaza City and are engaged in border fighting. Israel’s military has reported killing four prominent Hamas operatives. Israel has renewed warnings for civilians to move from the north of the enclave to the south, as they target Hamas militants reportedly hiding in tunnels under Gaza City. On Monday, residents reported dozens of airstrikes and the sound of tanks in the city. To the west, the coast road was hit multiple times from the air and sea. Palestinian health officials reported airstrikes near three large hospitals in Gaza City, and 117,000 civilians are said to be sheltering alongside patients and doctors in hospitals in the north. The conflict has resulted in increased demonstrations worldwide in support of the Palestinians, with antisemitic and Islamophobic harassment and attacks on the rise. Russia recently took over an airport in the Dagestan region, reportedly arresting 60 individuals after protesters stormed the facility looking for Jewish passengers from a plane originating from Israel. Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza has prompted calls for a “humanitarian pause” to allow aid in. Hamas is pushing for a five-day pause in Israel’s operations to allow for the release of civilian hostages held by the militants in exchange for aid and fuel to be delivered to Gaza.
