Stellenbosch remain in the driving seat at the top of the DStv Diski Challenge, after beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 at Idas Valley Stadium on Sunday afternoon, to stay three points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Thulani Mini continued his good form to score early and give Stellies a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Mini turned to provider as he set up Mervin Boji to score the second for the hosts. Mini, who scored a hat-trick last week, then added his second to make it 3-0. The former Chippa United youngster took his season tally to 11, while Boji scored his tenth.
The win takes the 2021/2022 champions to 63 points, and now the league title race is only between Stellenbosch and Sinethemba Badela’s young Sundowns team. Â
On Saturday Masandawana beat Royal AM 3-0 to move to 60 points. They are three points behind Evangelos Vellios’ team and have an inferior goal difference of four.
Also on Saturday, Orlando Pirates did their best to keep any hope alive with a 4-2 win over Richards Bay but with Stellenbosch’s victory on Sunday, Joseph Makhanya’s team are now officially out of the race, as they remain eight points behind, with only six points to play for.
There are now just two rounds of fixtures remaining. Stellenbosch faces Moroka Swallows away next week in the penultimate round, before hosting Golden Arrows in their final game on the 11th of May. Meanwhile, Sundowns play TS Galaxy before ending against Swallows.
