The son of former Pietermaritzburg mayor Themba Njilo and husband of media personality Faith Nketsi is expected to surrender to Durban police tomorrow (Monday) after the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court issued a search warrant this week.
Nzuzo Nkuthalo Njilo is wanted by the police in connection with a fraud case dating back to 2021.
His lawyer, Lucky Nhlabathi of LM Nhlabathi Incorporated, feels the arrest warrant was a “unnecessary public stunt” since Njilo is the son of an ex-mayor.
According to police, Njilo and his co-accused Kwanda Ntshangase scammed two businesswomen of R240 000 in May 2021. The two pretended to be salespeople at a truck business in Boksburg, Johannesburg.
The agreement was signed, and the money was paid in two installments, but the truck was never delivered. After the funds were transferred to Njilo’s account, he allegedly closed it in August and disappeared.
According to police, they discovered fraudulent information on the truck sale agreement and opened a criminal prosecution as a result.
Nhlabathi told the Sunday Tribune that the police hunt was unnecessary since they were in contact with police and had agreed that Njilo would be taken to Durban from Johannesburg on Monday.
“There was no need, it’s just inflating intimidation and fear. We are of the view that the situation does not warrant the public stunt,” he said.
Nhlabathi said he was confident that his client would be granted bail on Monday, but questioned why he was facing a charge of fraud.
“My instructions are to come with my client on Monday. I will only be doing that because I believe he will get bail, otherwise I would not have informed the police. There is a thin line between a normal business transaction and a criminal act, this should not have taken so much attention,” he said.
Njilo is married to Faith Nketsi, an influencer and reality TV star. They married in a grandiose traditional wedding in April of last year and have a daughter.
Njilo appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court in October last year for fraud after failing to provide copper concentrate worth over R1 million to the owners of Lund Industries.
The company’s owners brought him to court and secured a court order attaching his movable assets to reimburse money owing. Njilo’s bank accounts were frozen, and his home furnishings, which included mattresses, a refrigerator, a TV, and couches, were valued at barely R35 000.
