Authorities have launched a manhunt after a tragic incident unfolded in Athlone, Cape Town. Rival gangs engaged in a shootout on Canal Road, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old man.
Tragically, a 16-year-old girl, a grade 11 learner at Belgravia High School, was caught in the crossfire and killed by a stray bullet.

The incident occurred around 12:30 in the afternoon at the gates of Belgravia High School on Canal Road.
After being shot, the teenager ran back to school but collapsed and was declared dead at the scene. The community and authorities are outraged by this senseless act of violence.
The South African Police Service has launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled the scene. This unfortunate event once again brings attention to the ongoing issue of gang violence in Cape Town. Police are urging the Athlone community to come forward with any information that may lead to the apprehension of the responsible individuals.
Western Cape Police spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, stated, “The Athlone community is encouraged to assist police with information that will deliver the suspects who are responsible for an incident that claimed the life of an innocent schoolgirl this afternoon.
“With scant regard for the lives of others, rival gangs fired several shots randomly, killing a 20-year-old man in Canal Road in Athlone. A 16-year-old girl who was standing at the gates of Belgravia High School in Vlei Road was caught in the crossfire and sustained a fatal gunshot wound.”
