Former Proteas star Gerry Baker, leading South African bowler Jason Evans, and other Protea bowlers and Commonwealth medalists recently spent time with the juniors at Randburg Bowling Club.
The event aimed to raise funds for juniors selected to compete in the inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein. Among the chosen bowlers are U15 players Taryn Guthrie and Caiden Spence-Ross from Agape High School.
The tournament was organized by Proteas veteran and Commonwealth gold medalist Bobby Donnelly, along with Dale Gerrans, the junior bowls coordinator at Randburg Bowls Club.
Both Taryn and Caiden started bowling at a young age and aspire to be part of the Proteas bowling team in the future. Taryn hopes to encourage more girls to join the sport and dreams of having a female Proteas bowling team one day.
Club president Deon Botha mentioned that the junior members take great pride in their game and show exceptional skill in bowling. He believes that some future Proteas may emerge from their ranks.
All participants had a fantastic day, and the junior bowlers received their caps for the upcoming U15, U18, and U25 inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein.
