Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) as President Cyril Ramaphosa builds his new cabinet ahead of the expected announcement.
Godongwana was one of two Ministers chosen by the President from outside the Assembly in accordance with the Constitution, the other being Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel.
According to the Constitution, the President may nominate two people to his cabinet who are not members of parliament.

Godongwana will take over for Mike Basopu, who has been an ANC MP since 2021.
Basopu sat on the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, and the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans.
The fresh developments come as the President is likely to make cabinet changes in order to align the country’s leadership with those elected at the ANC’s National Elective Conference in December 2022.
A number of senior ministers may leave the executive after failing to obtain a position on the ANC’s 80-member National Executive Committee (NEC) during the Conference.
They are Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Public Enterprises, Thulas Nxesi, Minister of Employment and Labour, Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Following his election as ANC Secretary General, which places him full-time at Luthuli House, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula will also have to be replaced.

Tshilidzi Munyai and Mervyn Dirks resigned from the National Assembly, prompting their appointment to parliament.
ANC Vice President Paul Mashatile has also been sworn in as an MP, and will succeed David Mabuza as the country’s Deputy President.
