On Monday, Apple released security updates for its operating systems to address a security flaw.
While such updates are common, the company stated in the announcement that the issue “may have been actively exploited,” implying that hackers could have used the flaw to gain access to Apple devices.

Apple released security updates for macOS Ventura, the latest iPhone and iPad models, and the Safari web browser.
According to the Apple security updates website, security updates for its AppleTV and Apple Watch operating systems were also scheduled to be released on Monday, but details were not available at the time of publication.
While security flaws differed between devices, WebKit, its open-source browser engine, was a common target.
Beyond the update release notes, Apple’s announcement does not have any additional information on the exploits, according to spokesperson Scott Radcliffe.
The flaws were discovered by Xinru Chi of Pangu Lab, Ned Williamson of Google Project Zero, Wenchao Li and Xiaolong Bai of Alibaba Group, and an anonymous researcher, with special thanks to The Citizen Lab at The University of Toronto’s Munk School.

Patches for security flaws exploited on Apple devices are not uncommon, but keeping devices up to date can help keep users safe from attack.
The tech company doesn’t usually reveal details about an exploit until a patch is publicly available. In August, the company issued similarly time-sensitive patches for iPad, iPhone, and macOS users.
