Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has launched over 6,000 CCTV cameras across Gauteng in an effort to combat crime.
More than a year after his last State of the Province Address, the premier has now made good on his promise to roll out new surveillance measures at crime hotspots.
Launching the rollout in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Lesufi said residents would be able to spot the cameras around business districts, schools, townships, and public areas.
“We want to reclaim Small Street. We are putting permanent cameras on the entire Small Street. We intend to launch panic buttons if not this week, earlier next week so that anyone who downloads our panic button, if you press it the cameras may pick you up where you are.”
