Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), says the party is ready for the planned national shutdown on March 20.
He was giving a speech to the Western Cape Provincial Plenum in Athlone on the Cape Flats.
Malema also reiterated the party’s demand for reliable electricity and President Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation.

Malema announced on Friday that his party will demand that National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula apologise and withdraw her decision to exclude EFF MPs from the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday night, or face legal action.
“We’re not going to any school and there are no children who are going to any work here. So it is going to come to a standstill and that’s where the EFF is going to show the mass power and the Western Cape cannot be a failure so you cannot fail.
“You are not going to fail and remember you are not going to start at 8 Oclcok in the morning, 20th start at 12 Oclock. The prepations must be made by 12 midnight by the time people wake up everything is happening they are able to take pictures and send to their bosses,” Malema said.
“We do not need permission from the Ruperts, the Oppenheimers, we don’t need permission from the ANC and from Mbalula who says “people must go to school and children must go to work.”
“We are not fighting with anyone. We are not saying to anybody, you have wronged us. All we are asking for is for one man to step aside, for Eskom to give us electricity, and for the government to give us jobs.
“It can’t be correct that 60% of young people are unemployed and you call yourself an organisation of the people and you do nothing about it,” adds Malema.
