The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is currently investigating a heartbreaking incident that occurred at Mandlethu Primary School in Tsakane, Brakpan.
A Grade 1 girl tragically lost her life on Tuesday after allegedly consuming biscuits purchased from a local spaza shop. The department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, shared that the pupil began experiencing health complications in class shortly after the break at 11 a.m. and started vomiting a few minutes later.

As soon as the school became aware of the situation, the learner’s parents were immediately contacted to come to the school, while emergency services were alerted to provide necessary medical assistance.
Tragically, paramedics who arrived at the scene declared the pupil deceased. The girl’s parents confirmed that she had consumed biscuits bought from a local spaza shop, prompting further investigation by the police.
In response to this devastating incident, the GDE will be deploying their psycho-social support unit at the school on Wednesday to provide trauma support and counselling to all affected individuals.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep sadness over the incident and urged parents to remain vigilant regarding the edible goods their children consume.
Chiloane also called upon law enforcement agencies and municipalities to enforce strict compliance measures related to spaza shop products.
