Cape Town Spurs are set to offload an Orlando Pirates youth development product as they continue to struggle in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.
CT Spurs gained promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship back to the SA’s top flight at the start of the season through the PSL Promotional/relegation playoffs.
The Urban Warriors have had a turbulent start to the campaign after losing 12 games in the league after 13 matches played. They only registered one victory which came against Orlando Pirates on the first of November 2023.
The poor start to the season prompted CT Spurs to fire head coach Shaun Bartlett just a few months after helping the club seal promotion to the elite league.
Ernst Middendorp has since taken over the coaching reigns from Shaun Bartlett and he has a big task of moving CT Spurs out of the relegation zone.
CAPE TOWN SPURS SET TO PART WAYS WITH RIYAAZ NELL
While CT Spurs continue to struggle for form in the league, indications are that they are contemplating parting ways with Riyaaz Nell.
The 23-year-old attacker joined CT Spurs on a free transfer during the off-season after parting company with Marumo Gallants.
“Cape Town Spurs have started talks to offload Nell, who has been at the club for four months,” a source told FARPost.
“It comes as a very big surprise that Spurs want to part ways with a player who’s still very young and could add value to the team. I say it’s a surprise because when you look at this team, no one has really performed well.
“He signed a three-year contract with an option to extend for a further year. It will be a bit costly for the club to terminate the contract early.”
Nell, who played for Pirates’ development side in 2019 has had a slow start at CT Spurs after playing six matches in the league. He’s yet to open his scoring account.
It remains unclear whether the arrival of Middendorp will afford Nell a lifeline to fight for his position at the club.
