The Democratic Alliance’s KwaZulu-Natal premier candidate Chris Pappas was spotted having lunch at Kwa Mai-Mai, a downtown traditional market market in Johannesburg.
PAPPAS HEADS TO MAI MAI
In the video, Pappas could be seen eating braaied meat with uphuthu and relish.
The Umgeni Municipality was taking some down time following a 2024 election campaign tour.
However his choice of location, despite being in Johannesburg city centre, is a predominately Zulu stronghold and popular for anyone looking for traditional Zulu artefacts, medicine and traditional healers.
Pappas has gained popularity on social media as he is often viewed as a hands on leader. Another brownie point for the 34 year old is hid fluency in isiZulu, which helps him engage better with rural communities in the Natal midlands.
INVESTIGATION AGAINST UMGENI MAYOR
Last month, Pappas came under public scrutiny over allegations of corruption and nepotism.
Former DA KZN leader turned ANC member Sizwe Mchunu, also to the Public Protector, calling for an investigation into the allegations.
One of the allegations is with regards to R100 000 which was paid to Umgeni Tourism which is run by Pappas fiance JP Prinsloo.
In his letter Mchunu says that there is no documentation from the NGO, where they formally request the funds, nor what is ever stated what the money will be used for.
