Gauteng’s public hospitals have not been spared by the persistent water shortages experienced across the province this year, causing nearly 400 surgeries to be cancelled. This was revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, in a provincial parliamentary reply to DA shadow health MEC, Jack Bloom. According to the department, 16 hospitals experienced low pressure or complete water cuts for up to a weeks, leading to a cancellation of 392 surgeries with 36 transferred to other facilities. While these hospitals had to cancel some of their surgeries: Helen Joseph 36 operations cancelled. Edenvale Hospital had to cancel 117 operations due to seven water cuts. Pholosong Hospital on the East Rand led to 127 cancelled operations and 36 deferred operations. Kalafong hospital had major water shortages this year on 28 January and on 9 September, but used contingency measures to avoid cancelling any surgery.
