Mosa Lebusa, a defender for Mamelodi Sundowns, has provided insight into why Khuliso Mudau was overcome with emotion after their victory in the African Football League over Wydad Athletic Club.
The Bafana Bafana defender, who has been a standout player for Sundowns this season, had previously expressed his goal of winning a continental title for his parents and the desire to one day take a picture with them on the pitch holding a title.
This emotional response followed their disappointment in the semi-final of the CAF Champions League, where a late own goal led to their elimination on the away goal rule, despite being undefeated in the competition that season.
When asked about Mudau’s reaction, Lebusa explained, “I think it was a bit emotional because we worked so hard to get where we are. If you check the Champions League, the same team knocked us out, and at the very same stadium in front of our supporters. We knew that it was in our hands and we needed to work extremely hard to make our supporters happy.”
Lebusa also reflected on his journey with the club, noting discussions of his potential departure due to the emergence of Abdelmounaim Boutouil in the starting eleven. However, he emphasized that the coach expressed a need for him in the team and encouraged him to work hard for the team whenever given the opportunity.
Mudau will now shift his focus to the Bafana squad, as he is part of the 23-man squad set to face Benin and Rwanda in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
