There was a devastating hailstorm in parts of Johannesburg, particularly in Midrand and other northern areas of the city on Monday, 13 November.
MIDRAND BATTERED HARD BY HAILSTORM
This unexpected hailstorm caused severe damage in Midrand, leaving a trail of destruction. Alexandra also experienced destructive weather.
Properties and vehicles were damaged by golf ball-sized hail this evening. Some roads have become impassable due to hail and debris from the storm.
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE DESTRUCTION
One hailstorm victim, Tendai Bruce Mubayiwa, described the experience: “We just had a very bad hailstorm in Midrand. This is one of the worst I have experienced. For a minute I feared hail would blast through the roofing tiles. It was loud and terrifying. This was a scary experience.
Unfortunately, one of my neighbours was stuck in traffic during the hailstorm. He is fine but his car has some broken windows”.
More than 1000 vehicles were reportedly damaged by the hailstorm. Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported so far.
