Chart-topper Cici has been announced as the superstar headliner for the Eminent Video Music Awards (EVMA) scheduled for Saturday.
The third installment of the awards will be held at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, Johannesburg.
The Eminent Video Music Awards, founded and headed by Dumisani Sir Khanyile, are a platform to honor and celebrate creative individuals for their hard work in creating music videos and related visual content connected to the local music scene.
For Cici, who was born Busisiwe Thwala, this top billing marks a powerful return to the big time after overcoming challenges earlier in her career, including a stormy relationship with recording executive and producer Arthur Mafokate and hospitalization from domestic violence in 2018. After taking a break from music, Cici returned home to Ladysmith, quietly married a businessman, and gave birth to her first child in 2020. This year, she made a strong comeback in music, featuring in the hit song Hamba Juba, but also faced a legal battle to be freed from her record label Ambitiouz Records.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka honor
Additionally, EVMAs CEO Khanyile revealed that the legendary Chaka Chaka will be honored with the Benevolent award.
Khanile emphasized the importance of the awards, stating, “The EVMAs recognize the creatives that work behind the scenes in creating music videos. This initiative is here to celebrate and award such unseen creatives who are artists in their own right.” He also mentioned that recognizing Yvonne Chaka Chaka shows the growth of the awards.
This year, the EVMAs are introducing two new categories to recognize content created for digital space, including Best TikTok Content Creator and Best TikTok Trending Video.
Khanyile thanked TikTok SA for affording local music the opportunity to shine in a different way online.
