Kaizer Chiefs have a new number five. It’s the former Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United player Luke Fleurs.
KAIZER CHIEFS SIGN LUKE FLEURS
Following his departure from SuperSport in September, the 23-year-old defender with three Bafana Bafana caps began his trial with Amakhosi at Naturena in October.
The Soweto giants have soon decided to sign the former Ubuntu FC central defender on a two-year deal.
“Luke Fleurs signs for Amakhosi! Kaizer Chiefs have fortified their defensive unit with the signing of Under-23 international, Luke Fleurs, on a two-year contract, with an option for a further season. Welcome to the family!” the Glamour Boys announced.
Does the Fleurs deal make sense? Well, yes. Modern football squads each have five options in central defence.
Amakhosi previously had four: Given Msimango, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Njabulo Ngcobo, and Zitha Kwinika.
WHERE IS HE?
Asked why Fleurs hasn’t made his debut yet, interim coach Cavin Johnson said it is a matter of match fitness.
“At the moment, he’s very very close [to playing], the problem with Luke is he hasn’t played for a long time,” said Johnson as quoted by FARPost.
“So I think as a player, he’s a very good player, a good addition to our centre-back pairing. I think he can change it a little bit.
“But to put him at the deep end [in the Soweto Derby], I think it will be myself and my technical team finding the right time and the right moment to bring him along,” the Chiefs tactician concluded.
