Hugo Broos, the head coach of Bafana Bafana, has commented on the significant progress made by Khuliso Mudau, a defender for Mamelodi Sundowns, in recent months.
Broos announced a 23-man squad on Friday in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda later this month.
When asked about Mudau, who received a lot of media attention after his performance in a friendly against Ivory Coast last month, Broos said he has been impressed by Mudau’s defensive improvements over the past few months.
“I will be honest with you,” Broos said on SABCSport.
“When I came here and saw Mudau play for Sundowns, I wasn’t really happy with him.
“But during the last six months, I saw an enormous progression in the way he’s playing. He is not only the strong offensive right back anymore, but he has also improved defensively.
“Khuliso progressed enormously on a defensive level, and I’m very happy with it because we have a good right defender who is also strong offensively. That is important.”
When asked if that means Mudau is now the first-choice right back, Broos was hesitant.
“I don’t want to talk in terms like this,” Broos replied.
“But he scored many, many good points against Ivory Coast.”
