Quinton Fortune, the former Bafana Bafana midfielder, has taken on the role of assistant coach at the Mexican club, Guadalajara Chivas. This announcement coincided with the introduction of the team’s new head coach, Veljko Paunovic, on Monday night.
As a former Bafana Bafana international, Fortune will be working with Claudio Arzeno and Nuno Miguel Gomes as part of Paunovic’s coaching staff. Together, they will bring their combined expertise to Chivas in preparation for the upcoming 2023 Liga MX Clausura season, with the aim of rejuvenating the team’s performance.
The appointment of Veljko Paunovic comes as Chivas looks for a fresh start following the departure of former manager Roberto Cardea. The club expressed its well-wishes for Paunovic, anticipating a successful collaboration and positive results on the field.
Prior to joining Guadalajara Chivas, Quinton Fortune was involved with the England Football Association, contributing to the England Elite Coach Programme. His extensive experience includes serving as the Under 23 assistant coach at Manchester United and holding a similar position at Cardiff City Under 21s.
The challenge ahead for Quinton Fortune at Guadalajara Chivas is significant, as the club’s last Liga MX title was secured five years ago. Their last appearance in the championship was the Clausura 2017 Finals, which came 11 years after their previous title. With the addition of new coaching talent, including Fortune, Chivas is hopeful about turning their fortunes around in the upcoming season.
