Mamelodi Sundowns reached the finals of the MTN8 after defeating Kaizer Chiefs in a heated semi-final match played at a jam-packed Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday afternoon.
The 2-1 victory means that Sundowns won the encounter 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at FNB Stadium two weeks ago.
The Brazilians will now face the winner between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC who will play their match on Sunday at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers have a 2-1 lead from their first leg in Cape Town.
The unstoppable Brazilians scored as early as the 10th second. Straight from kick-off, Chiefs goalie Brandon Petersen was dispossessed by Peter Shalulile who pounced and rolled the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Ashley du Preez equalised from the penalty spot after Sipho Mbule handled the ball inside the box. The deadly Shalulile grabbed his second goal with an easy header that bamboozled Petersen.
Needing one goal to go through, Chiefs were denied a clear penalty late in the match after Mduduzi Mdantsane was kicked by Thapelo Maseko in the penalty area. The referee did not point to the spot and Chiefs felt aggrieved by the decision. Amakhosi fought hard for the equaliser but they found the home side defence in top form and in an uncompromising mood.
The two teams will resume their DStv Premiership campaign on Wednesday with Sundowns hosting Stellenbosch FC in Tshwane and Amakhosi entertaining Sekhukhune United at the FNB Stadium.
