The Hawks are surely working overtime to beat corruption in the country, especially corruption by people in leadership positions. On Monday morning the Hawks made another huge arrest that left Mzansi talking. According to the SABC Nnews, more than 10 municipal officials were apprehended by the Hawks for alleged corruption related to tender irregularities at the Mogalakwena Municipality in Mokopane. The suspects include a former mayor, an ANC REC member in the Waterberg region and business people.

According to many South Africans that are currently discussing the arrest on Twitter, these are good news since Mokopane is a mess because of those people. Mogalakwena Local Municipality in particular has been placed under administration after serious corruption allegations over the past decade, which have resulted in at least six mayors being shown the door.

According to news reports President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier authorised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate alleged corruption and maladministration at the troubled Mogalakwena local municipality in the Limpopo town of Mokopane. The president had signed a proclamation authorising the SIU to dig deep into corruption claims involving millions of rand and maladministration at the municipality.Among the allegations of maladministration was an amount totaling to R3bn which was audited as unauthorised expenditure in the past three financial years.

The arrest has left many South Africans shook, with some saying they wish the Hawks can do the same with all the municipalities. “I can’t wait for that to happen in Thabazimbi Local Municipality. It is so worrying that even today we are still waiting for the release of the @RSASIU which implicates many politicians and officials including business people,” a Twitter user said.
