Last year’s runners-up Cape Town City and Maritzburg United both remained winless after playing to a goalless draw on Tuesday evening.
Marc Van Heerden had the first chance of the game from a promising free-kick position, but he missed his attempt in the sixth minute.
A few minutes later, Maritzburg missed a chance via Karim Kimvuidi, while a minute later Brandon Theron hit the outside of upright.
In the 15th minute, Craig Martin had two attempts but both went wide inside one minute. Tawanda Macheke’s attempt for the Team of Choice in the 29th minute went wide.
City were asking for a penalty in the 35th minute for an alleged hand ball in the Maritzburg box, but the referee waved play on and the game went goalless into the break.
Brian Dirk Hlongwa had the first decent attempt in the second half but his header was cleared by Van Heerden.
Maritzburg hit the post for a second time when Friday Samu’s header strived the right post in the 65th minute.
Van Heerden saw a header sail over the bar in the 73rd minute, as chances for both sides mainly came from set pieces in the second half.
Five minutes later, the Team of Choice had a brilliant chance after the ball fell to Conco following great work by Samu, but the substitute put his shot just wide.
New City signing Lekay then saw an attempt fly over the bar in the 81st minute. Maritzburg had another chance after a ricochet in the box but a shot in the 91st minute went over the bar.
The draw meant City remained at the bottom of the log even though they picked up their first point of the season, while Maritzburg collected their third draw.
