Busted| SAPS Officer In Hot Waters for taking R5k bribe
An Eastern Cape police officer who was allegedly paid R5,000 by a foreigner linked to drugs is due to appear in the Mdantsane magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
The 42-year-old foreigner was arrested by the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation team, Gauteng crime intelligence unit and Hillbrow flying squad on Thursday.
He was transported to the Eastern Cape the next day. The 41-year-old investigating officer was arrested on Sunday.
They were both detained at a police station in East London.
“It is alleged that in 2018 the detective, who was stationed at the provincial commissioner’s organised crime unit at the time, was assigned a docket of possession of drugs where a foreign national was the suspect,” Hawks provincial spokesperson Cpt Yolisa Mgolodela said yesterday.
Information was received by the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation team that the detective, as the investigator, was paid R5,000 by the foreign national.
“The money was allegedly deposited at a Shoprite in Gauteng and withdrawn from the East London Shoprite.”
Mgolodela said the case against the foreigner had been withdrawn in court due to the non-availability of witnesses, who were allegedly deliberately not subpoenaed on numerous occasions.
