Polokwane City have opted against extending the contract of former Orlando Pirates star Mpho Makola.
The midfield maestro helped the club to promotion after signing short-term contracts last season.
Makola was expected to bring much needed experience to City following their promotion next season.
However the club surprisingly released him and City top boss Tincy Tema has since explained their decision!
Why ex Orlando Pirates star was released by City?
“The thing is their contracts came to an end. Remember we gave them short-term contracts,” Tema told SowetanLive.
“If you check, they played less than 10 games as we were already towards the end of the season. We called them in so they can help us with a short-term contract. But sitting down and looking at what we have now and also what we want to achieve, we felt we shouldn’t renew their contracts.
“So they were not part of the plans for the technical team, but it was not an easy decision. So, we can’t be crucified for not renewing their contracts.”

In other news, Orlando Pirates are set to jet out to Spain for their upcoming pre-season camp.
The Buccaneers reported for duty last week at the High-Performance Centre in Tshwane. The players were medically assessed and next travel to Rustenburg where physical training begins!
José Riveiro and his squad will be based in Marabella from July 9 to July 21, 2023 for their pre-season camp.
In Spain, Orlando Pirates will face Maccabi Tel Aviv, Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle and local Spanish second tier side UD Las Palmas.
Other teams that will be camped in Marbella include Bournemouth, Charlton Athletic, Al Ain FC, Espanyol, Chelsea’s under-18s and more!
