Stellenbosch FC DStv Diski Challenge head coach Evangelos Vellios says some of his young stars must have first-team coach Steve Barker excited about the future.
Vellios was left impressed in particular by the experience of Athenkosi Mcaba and the young Tylon Smith recently.
The two players were in fine form as Stellenbosch in a 1-0 victory against Orlando Pirates two weeks ago and the team continued their form with a huge win over Chippa United last week.
Stellies are level on points with table toppers Pirates but goal difference separates the teams.
Smith has been phenomenal for the Cape Winelands side, having won Engen Knockout Challenge last year and was named defender of the tournament for the Cape Town leg.
Vellios stated that there was a strategy and it worked well for them with the two at the back and says first team head coach Steve Barker must licking his lips to see such pairing.
“Athi (Mcaba) is massive what a performance, we do that as a strategy because now you can see that talents met who’s 18-years old played next to him, recently won Engen Knockout national and you look at the two of them playing together and I’m sure coach Steve (Barker) is licking his lips up there saying this could be the partnership to carry the club forward.” Vellios told iDiskiTimes.
“We tested because it’s the easier way to see comparable of the players, you can see they took a lot to heat but that’s the best way of learning and to be test, our defenders going up against the young Mofokeng who’s very young still but he’s gonna test you gonna learn you will have to find solutions so it’s great when PSL players come down.
“Yesterday Mervin Boji didn’t recover in time, he tried to train and he was in tears, he was crying because he wanted to play this game, now that’s the kind of human beings that makes it in life, just recently he scored a penalty that won us the Carling Knockout Cup he scored goals in England at the Next Gen, won the league already with this team and yet doesn’t feel too big to come and help us.”
